Bio

I am a teacher-scholar at the Fashion Institute of Technology who teaches cosmetic and forensic chemistry and systems thinking to non-science majors. My research focuses on upcycling waste resources, such as waste lipids into functional materials like soap. I helped develop some of the Toxicology for Chemists resources which I advise you to check out.

Likes: Renewable resources, biocatalysis, gels, Bloom's taxonomy, the scientific method

Dislikes: when students forget to put on safety goggles, the sandwiches at conferences, SDS without much information

A Professor, Jim Bann, had a bag of soybeans in his office. Inquiring, I found out that he uses them in his biochemistry laboratory course, the students perform a multi-step/day laboratory procedure to extract an enzyme, chalcone isomerase. Chalcone compounds are frequently used in ochem laboratories as well so I saw potential for cross-disciplinary experiments. Jim was interested in potentially publishing his educational materials and I thought it might be good to add to the soy project. I will look into further...

Do you want to share what worked well? or things you want to work on for next year?Anyone can chime in (please do) but calling out @cmwoodbridge and @Julian Silverman  as they were both brave enough to post (thank you :)). ...
  • Julian Silverman was just tagged in a comment: To kick off this discussion, I want to highlight the work of Dr. @Julian Silverman, whose research at the intersection of chemistry and fashion has been a huge inspiration for my understanding of this field. I’ve been particularly fascinated by their approach to the idea that what we currently consider "trash" in the textile industry can actually be a high-value feedstock for new chemical processes. Furthermore, their ability to produce robust but concise LCAs provides a vital roadmap for determining if a "green" solution is actually better for the planet in the long run. And, to get the ball rolling, we’d love to hear from the community:Dr. Silverman, I remembered you’ve talked about system thinking to address fashion supply chain. If you were in charge and could enforce just one Green Chemistry "Golden Rule" that every fashion brand had to follow, which principle would be the biggest game-changer?For the educators here: How do you use the concept of a Life Cycle Assessment to help students understand the hidden impacts of their own wardrobes? Are there specific waste streams in the textile industry (e.g., fabric scraps, chemical runoff, or old garments) that you believe hold the most untapped potential for green chemistry innovation? We're looking forward to learning from all of you!...

  • Julian Silverman was just tagged in a comment: Hi @Julian Silverman  and @John De Backere ,This thread made me think about something I’ve noticed with non-majors. Sometimes they actually grasp the idea of “mirror image molecules” faster than we expect, especially when it’s tied to something tangible like smell or drug effects. The moment they realize two molecules can look almost the same but behave differently in the body, stereochemistry suddenly feels less abstract.I would like to know from your experience or has anyone tried introducing case studies or real examples first (like drugs with different enantiomer effects) before asking students to spot stereocenters? I wonder if starting with the consequence rather than the structure helps it stick. ...
  • Julian Silverman was just tagged in a comment: @Saskia van Bergen I'm not sure how a screen reader is going to deal with the SMILES string. If it reads it as written, that will be confusing to the student. @Julian Silverman I'm not sure how to label chemical structures as you ask. Would something like "answer 1" work? Or start a list like "molecule 1" and at the end of the unit have a text file that says (for example) molecule 1 is aspirin? ...
  • Julian Silverman was just tagged in a comment: @Julian Silverman  Yes, we just got that mandate as well. I will say that though Pearson has labeled their ppts "accessible" for the  Timberlake text, they are not (nor even close). Currently I'm struggling to meet the deadline imposed by GGC in my "spare time." I would like to see content from this community (and the GCI, Beyond Benign) consider updating content or having a requirement for accessibility as part of the submission so that folks who are implementing content don't have to fix this. At the moment, my solution for chemical structures is "molecule" or "reaction." In my narrated ppts, this is probably OK but I realize that doesn't quite meet the intent. My organic colleagues are struggling with this. cmw...
