Bio

Akwaowo is a research assistant at the International Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Research (ICEER) and a graduate student studying Environmental Chemistry under the Commonwealth-funded split-site PhD program at Akwa Ibom State University in Nigeria and Newcastle University in the UK. His research investigates the impact of organic pollutants on disturbed wetland ecosystems.
He is a member of some professional organizations including the Society for Environmental Toxicology & Chemistry (SETAC), the International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and the American Chemical Society (ACS). Prior to starting his doctoral program, Akwaowo attended the IUPAC Green Chemistry Postgraduate Summer School in Venice and became more passionate about green chemistry activities in Sub-Saharan Africa. He has served as a coordinator for the ACS Festival of Chemistry in Nigeria, a program that uses a series of hands-on activities to demonstrate the importance of chemistry, encouraging pupils and students to pursue careers in the chemical sciences. He is a younger chemist advocate and the 2021 ACS Leadership Development Awardee. As a Graduate Student Liaison for Beyond Benign, he is passionate about supporting the development of green chemistry education and creating awareness in the communities around West Africa about the importance of sustainability.
