Below are a series of special issues in academic journals focused on green and sustainable chemistry education. Many are open access with articles available through the linked websites below.
Chemical Education for Global Sustainability (2026, Open Access)
RSC Sustainability
From the original call for proposals: "This themed collection explores ways to integrate sustainability into chemistry curricula, professional development and beyond, ensuring inclusive, expert-led learning communities that support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Guest Edited by Professor Helen Drummond (North-West University, South Africa), Professor Marietjie Potgieter (University of Pretoria, South Africa), Professor Gildo Girotto Junior (UNICAMP, Brazil) and Dr Juliana Vidal (Beyond Benign), this themed collection welcomes global content, with particular emphasis on attracting contributions from Africa and South America.
Topics for this collection may include, but are not limited to:
- Articles describing new and innovative teaching activities, pedagogies, and laboratory experiments that address one or more of the UN SDGs for secondary and higher education.
- Articles on scientific outreach focusing on sustainability and green chemistry topics.
- Articles on inclusion and diversity with a focus on sustainability and green chemistry.=
- Articles exploring how chemistry education can integrate systems thinking and foster critical sustainability skills, ensuring productive collaboration with the chemical industry to support a sustainable future.
- Perspectives on trends, initiatives and future directions of sustainable and green chemistry education.
- Public perception and engagement towards sustainability and green chemistry.
- Tutorial reviews and case studies on the implementation of best teaching, learning and research practices in sustainability and green chemistry towards achieving the UN SDGs.
- Critical reviews discussing aspects of global sustainability, policy and knowledge frameworks.
Molecular Approaches and Systemic Changes: Green Chemistry Education for a Sustainable Future (2025-2026, Open Access)
Sustainability & Circularity NOW
This special issue focuses on a diversity of examples in green and sustainable chemistry education from academic institutions across the world.
Advances in Green Chemistry Education (2019)
Green Chemistry Letters & Reviews
This special issue includes articles focused on a wide range of topics in chemical education, including organic chemistry experiments and activities, concepts of toxicology, art and green chemistry, and the intersection of green chemistry with policy and social and environmental justice.
Reimagining Chemistry Education: Systems Thinking, and Green and Sustainable Chemistry (2019)
Journal of Chemical Education
This special issue topic was a group effort of the IUPAC Committee on Chemistry Education, the ACS Green Chemistry Institute, and the ACS Committee on Environmental Improvement. Papers in the issue are intended to be the inaugural global reference point for literature on systems thinking in chemistry education that will lead to further understanding about the interdependence of the components of systems at work for chemistry learners, and the application of systems thinking to green and sustainable chemistry education. Contributions to the "Reimagining Chemistry Education: Systems Thinking, and Green and Sustainable Chemistry" special issue have a designation that they are part of the collection published in this issue.
