Summary
This case study explores Protease Catalyzed Peptide Synthesis (PCPS) as an example of a synthetic strategy that aligns with the 12 principles of Green Chemistry, however, struggles to be a viable strategy for large scale peptide synthesis. In comparison, Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS) remains the primary method of chemical peptide synthesis despite the significant amounts of chemical waste generated using this strategy.

Peptide synthesis can be a complex topic and this case study provides a general overview for to introduce peptide synthesis and associated sustainability challenges to undergraduate students. In my experience, students have many questions about the details not discussed. In my experience, It has been fruitful to assign students to research and answer the questions they have, as well as present their findings to the class.
