The Institute of Chemistry Ireland (ICI) is delighted and honoured to be organising the 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress (ECC-9), to be held in Dublin, Ireland, from 7th – 11th July, 2024.

The 9th EuChemS Chemistry Congress will have an exciting scientific programme with world-leading plenary speakers, invited speakers and short oral presentations, supplemented with a series of poster presentations, focused around eight scientific themes:

  • Advances in Synthetic Organic Chemistry (including Asymmetric Methodology, Inorganic Methodology, Green Synthetic Methodologies)
  • Catalysis (including Organometallic Catalysis, Organocatalysis, Biocatalysis, Photoredox Catalysis, Electrocatalysis)
  • Chemistry Meets Biology For Health (including Medicinal, Bioinorganic, Bioorganometallic, Radiochemistry, Food and Nutrition)
  • Education, History, Cultural Heritage, and Ethics in Chemistry
  • Energy, Environment and Sustainability (including Emerging Sustainable Chemistry, Technologies, Biomass Valorisation, Green Synthetic Methodologies, Circular Bioeconomy, Food)
  • Nanochemistry/Materials (including Organic and Inorganic, Material Science, Devices, Circuits, Systems, Neuromorphic Networks, and Bio-Inspired Computing)
  • Physical, Analytical and Computational Chemistry (including Physical chemistry of materials, Advances in physical chemistry and new techniques, New analytical methodologies and applications, Sensors, Theory and applications of computational chemistry and Machine Learning/AI)
  • Supramolecular Chemistry (including Chirality, Molecular Machines, Dissipative Systems, MOFs, Molecular Nanotopology, Sensors, Metallo-Supramolecular Chemistry, Molecular Logic, Host-Guest Chemistry, Self-Assembly Materials and Higher Order Structures)

The programme will feature dedicated sessions organised by the EuChemS European Young Chemists´ Network of EuChemS (EYCN) and the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland (ICI), and will be completed by a series of joint seminars and mini-symposia on:

  • New strategies and requirements for analytical chemistry in environmental assessment
  • Homogeneous catalysis and applications in synthesis
  • Recent advances in pharmaceutical chemistry and manufacturing

This Congress is the 9th in a series that started in Budapest in 2006, and since then has been held in several cities across Europe before reaching Dublin. The EuChemS Congresses are noted for their excellent scientific level, and have a reputation for giving all the attendees and participants the opportunity to listen to and interact with some of the most celebrated researchers in the world.

Event Description

The NSF Center for Sustainable Polymers (CSP) in partnership with the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA) and the Minnesota Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) will be offering a FREE three-day workshop at the University of Minnesota for high school chemistry teachers on green and sustainable chemistry. The workshop was developed through the University of Minnesota MRSEC Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program. Applicants from across the Midwest are welcome.

In 2024, Green Chemistry celebrates its 25th anniversary. On this occasion, members of the Editorial Board are holding symposia worldwide for their local communities. Join Prof. Helen Sneddon and Dr Kirsten Hawkins on this event, a celebration of some of the UK's latest advances in Green and Sustainable Chemistry. 

The symposium will be held in person at Department of Chemistry, The University of York, UK from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm on Monday 24th June, 2024

Please note that there is a maximum number of in-person attendees, so in-person attendance cannot be guaranteed. A confirmation email will be sent with further instructions after the registration deadline.

On the territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations of the Pacific Northwest, the trees are deep in conversation and negotiation via mycelial networks. The salmon return to make the stream bed fresh and cool for the next generation, while coastal nurseries provide a place to rest where old meets new and salty meets sweet.

Join us for a week to observe and explore how Nature creates the richness and complexity of life through chemistry. Adventure through the ecotones to learn the ways in which Nature operates at the molecular scale to communicate, assemble/ disassemble, purify, clean, colorize, protect, detect, repair, and a host of other functionalities that parallel those needed in commerce.  

Tune your senses through exploration, experience, and experts to understand the critical ways in which Nature’s chemistry differs from modern commercial chemistries to achieve the same functional end, and how this learning can broaden and benefit your approach to Nature-positive R&D.

The fields of chemistry and biomimicry will converge to explore the profound lessons nature offers for shaping a world characterized by high-performing chemistry strategies and materials that benefit the people and places in which they are made, used, and managed. Sip tea and watch the eelgrass sway while you practice Biomimicry Thinking with Nature’s recipes and methods.

 

While the content is designed with the non-chemist in mind, chemistry professionals will gain valuable insights into Nature’s life-friendly chemistry principles and hands-on training using the biomimicry research methodology.

Throughout this workshop, our world-renowned biomimicry instructors will teach participants to: 

  • Recognize the roles chemistry plays in the natural world and their relevance to the roles chemistry plays in commerce and industry,
  • Distinguish between biotic and abiotic chemistries in the natural world,
  • Discover the principles underlying Nature’s elegant and sophisticated life-friendly chemistries,
  • Understand the principles underlying Nature’s multifunctional, life-friendly chemistry-based materials,
  • Use Biomimicry Thinking tools to abstract chemistry design principles and deep patterns from specific, function-based natural strategies, and
  • Apply Biomimicry Thinking tools to solve a chemistry-related challenge.

This workshop is open to professional and university-level participants from all backgrounds and levels of experience with biomimicry. The agenda is designed for:

  • Innovators within commercial sectors touched by chemistry, such as chemicals, cosmetics, packaging, textiles, electronics, personal care, medical, and energy, who are interested in bringing Nature’s Chemistry and materials genius to their project work and innovation strategies through Biomimicry Thinking.
  • Innovators without chemistry training who are interested in gaining the knowledge that would allow them to be productive partners alongside professional chemists as they work to bring Nature’s Chemistry and materials genius to their project work and innovation strategies.
  • Sustainability champions who want to be inspired by the natural world at the molecular scale as they work to solve humanity’s toughest sustainability challenges.
  • Educators who want to bring Nature’s Chemistry and materials genius into the classroom.
  • Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Biomimicry program with Arizona State University interested in the Biomimicry Specialist Certification. Connect Your College Students to Tomorrow’s Clean Energy FutureThe BETO BRIDGES workshop will take place May 15-17, 2024 at Argonne National Laboratory

This engaging workshop will introduce educators to national laboratory research in bioenergy. Participants will explore how the Bioenergy Research and Education Bridge (BRIDGES) Program, a case study-based bioenergy education curriculum, can be effectively incorporated into the classroom and help to educate students on this clean energy STEM pathway.

 

The case study-based bioenergy education curriculum is intended to be taught in diverse settings including community colleges, technical colleges, universities, and upper-level high school classrooms. Created by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory, BRIDGES provides background and foundational materials for students and instructors with no prior bioenergy knowledge.

 

Join us for three exciting days of information, exploration, expert talks, and tours of Argonne National Laboratory! New this year: A sneak peek into the next two case studies coming down the pike!

 

Eligibility
  • This workshop is open to adjunct and full-time community college, technical college and university instructors. If space allows, upper-level high school teachers may also apply.
  • If located greater than 50 miles from Argonne, participants may be eligible for U.S. domestic travel reimbursement (e.g. mileage, hotel, air).

Over the past few decades, research and developments in chemical as well as applied sciences have been directed towards finding cleaner solutions and sustainable techniques. The seventeen sustainable development goals (SDGs) are defined by the United Nations for preserving the planet Earth and maintaining its harmony. Few of the emerging branches of chemical sciences, viz green chemistry and sustainable chemistry, focus on SDG12, “Responsible consumption and production". Developments in the fields of nanoscience and material science have opened new avenues to achieve SDGs 6, 7, 14, and 15. ICCE is a global platform for educators, teachers, chemists, and scientists around the world to bring chemical education closer to sustainable prosperity and pave the way to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Specifically, the objectives are:
1) To provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas related to chemical education among researchers, educators, students, and other stakeholders from around the world.
2) To facilitate collaboration and networking among individual and institutions involved in chemical education, with the aim of fostering partnerships and joint initiatives that can improve the quality and accessibility of chemical education globally.
3) To contribute to the achievement of the UN SDGs by promoting the role of chemistry education in addressing global challenges such as climate change and inequality.

The program is designed to discuss the role of chemistry education not only in classroom setting but also in societal context. Novel teaching and learning methods in chemistry are still the key topics in this conference. Professional development of educators at all levels (school and university) will be included. Societal context of chemistry education such as sustainability, ethics, diversity, equity, and inclusion will also be emphasized in this conference.

The program will include nine sessions:
