Event Description

This free, virtual workshop for Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC) signers aims to help educators effectively adapt and implement the ChemFORWARD module, which focuses on chemical hazard assessment and safer alternatives, into their curriculum materials. Chemical Hazard Assessment is a critical component when designing safer chemicals and coming up with safer alternatives to toxic and hazardous chemicals.

The ChemFORWARD module helps instructors teach students how to use the ChemFORWARD platform to obtain hazard information for specific chemicals, identify safer chemicals to replace chemicals of concern in research and product formulations and avoid regrettable substitutions.

During the session, facilitators will guide participants through the resources, offer practical strategies for adaptation and implementation, and provide opportunities for educators to share insights. The virtual 1.5-hour workshop will include group-based learning, discussions, networking opportunities, and a Q&A session.

The goals for the workshop include:

  • Educate participants on the value of teaching green chemistry and toxicological principles, including hazards, risks, hazard assessment, and safer alternatives.
  • Guide participants on practical approaches to effectively incorporate the ChemFORWARD curriculum materials into their courses.
  • Empower participants to adapt and implement the ChemFORWARD module resources and expand their professional network.

Workshop participants interested in using the module in their courses will be given temporary access to the ChemFORWARD database for free!

What is #LatinXChem?

@LatinXChem is a virtual forum through which the community of Latin American chemists located anywhere in the world can share and discuss their research results and advances.

More than 1200 posters from 43 countries were received in its first version, with 20 million impacts on Twitter.

The fifth event organized by @LatinXChem will be the #LatinXChem23 Conference (October 14 and 15, 2024).

Advantages

  • You can participate whether you work at home or in the laboratory.
  • Being a virtual event, you do not need to travel, the costs decrease substantially, without demerit to the quality of the work or to the scientific discussion they will generate. Additionally, its environmental footprint is lower.
  • For each category, the best works will be selected for an award. Our sponsors will deliver prizes (book vouchers) for 100-200 USD. The best poster overall for the event will be awarded a special prize (150 USD) and one prize for the most popular work (150 USD).

Follow-up Steps

  • Posters can be presented in Spanish, Portuguese, or English.
  • Tweet your poster. Include the title, abstract, your category hashtag, and the main event hashtag (#LatinXChem24) at 12:00 pm (UTC) on October 14, 2024; The event will last 48 hours.
  • Discuss and share your work on any social media. Make sure to respond to questions from the community and juries.
  • Choose any dimension or format for your poster: the important point is that the text and figures are legible. We strongly recommend visualizing it on Twitter before the conference.

Event Description

In this webinar, Hanover Research will present our newly released asset, "Top Career Skills for New Grads in 2024," as well as proven best practices in higher education in order to think strategically about aligning to workforce needs. Additionally, during this webinar, higher education leaders highly skilled in working with workforce alignment strategies will present on their own institution’s goals and plans; and provide insight into how other institutions are thinking about the topic. Federal, state, and provincial governments around the world are increasingly demanding that colleges and universities demonstrate workforce outcomes from their students. Meanwhile, employers often report a misalignment between the skills needed in their employees and what graduates possess. To promote the success of graduates, many institutions are eager to improve their workforce alignment strategies. You won’t want to miss this all of the good stuff that will be presented during this webinar.

Speakers:

  • Dr. JoAnn Lighty - Dean of the College of Engineering, Boise State University (ID)
  • Dr. Lewatis McNeal - Vice Provost for Regional Higher Education and Partnerships, Ohio University (OH)

Event Description

Are you ready to see your institution move forward to engage faculty and change curriculum toward sustainability issues? This workshop will introduce participants to the Piedmont/Ponderosa model, which has been adopted successfully across the United States and beyond, reaching thousands of professors over two decades.

The Piedmont/Ponderosa model of two-day faculty development workshops has been used by dozens of institutions—large and small, public and private—with resulting faculty enthusiasm and renovated courses. This virtual workshop will provide a history and overview with discussion time on Day 1 and delve more deeply into details of workshop form and function on Day 2. Both days will last 2.5 hours.

Interested faculty leaders will be equipped with the knowledge, materials, and strategies to adapt this “Sustainability Across the Curriculum” model to their own institutions. Activities will explore the pace, timing, funding, staffing, and philosophy behind the unique aspects of the workshop model. Resource materials, interactive breakout room discussions and opportunities for Q&A will be included. Challenges in making the transition to teaching fellow faculty will also be discussed. Participants will be provided with background materials beforehand and will have multiple handouts and guides to support deeper discussion on Day 2.

Participants in this workshop will be eligible to apply to participate in the Global Sustainability Across the Curriculum Program Development Support Group, a longer term program that guides participants through the key steps involved in establishing a successful sustainability across the curriculum program at their institution.

If you are looking for a shorter workshop that is applicable to faculty new to sustainability and the teaching of it, please see Integrating Sustainability Literacy Across Your Curricula — Best Practices.

Hosting Organization(s)
Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)

Event Description

In June 2023 AASHE piloted the first Sustainability Education Forum. Over 140 registrants from 13 countries across five continents came together to discuss and listen about the challenges and opportunities for sustainability education. Attendees felt that the event facilitated “inspiring, engaging, and meaningful discussions,” provided “a very holistic way of structuring learning and sharing,” and fostered “an inspirational sense of community.” Read more about the 2023 event in this article and these testimonials.

We’d like to build upon that experience and invite you to join the Sustainability Education Forum 2024 on June 6 & 7! Let’s come together, share our expertise and co-create our emerging future. What and how do we teach students given the urgency of the times? How do we “fall-forward” on issues related to sustainability teaching and learning in higher education? Let’s use this opportunity to listen and speak about the issues that matter to interdisciplinary sustainability educators.

Are higher education institutions simply reverting to how things were done pre-pandemic or can we use this opportunity to truly redesign systems? New and different voices need to be heard and conversations need to catalyze actionable change. On June 6 and 7, let’s talk with each other, think with each other and respectfully challenge each other’s ideas in order to advance sustainability education across the curriculum.

The Sustainability Education Forum (SEF) will provide space to explore these possibilities and more. Per the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a forum is “a public meeting place for open discussion” and this is what the SEF offers – a space for authentic conversations, where we can engage as a community and with each other. Throughout the SEF, you will have plenty of chances to exchange ideas and make new professional connections, while gaining inspiration and an opportunity to recharge your own efforts.

Intended Audience

This is the event to attend if you’re:

  • a faculty in any discipline who is engaged with sustainability education
  • interested in or just starting incorporating sustainability literacy in your courses
  • considering building a sustainability curriculum development program at your institution
  • new or a veteran at building sustainability across the curriculum programs
  • involved with sustainability-degree programs
  • a sustainability staff who is involved with curriculum initiatives
  • an instructional designer supporting faculty incorporating sustainability in their courses
  • anyone interested in sustainability education and research at higher education institutions.

At this event, you will connect with others who approach their work with the same sense of urgency that you do. It is these types of connections that serve us throughout the years; they make the hard times manageable and the good times fun. Join us and let’s make some good times — together!

Event Dates: The SEF will take place on Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7 spanning multiple timezones. See tentative schedule.
