Monica Hensley
Instruction and Research Manager, Higher Education
She/Her/Hers
Bio
Throughout her doctoral studies, Monica demonstrated her commitment to chemistry education research. Collaborating with teaching faculty, she played a pivotal role in integrating risk-based safety instruction into the undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory curriculum, enhancing the preparedness of students for safe laboratory practices. Her dedication to safety also led to her active involvement with the student-led Lab Safety Team (LST), a grassroots movement dedicated to promoting safety awareness.
With her interest in Green Chemistry and sustainability, Monica also participated in the American Chemical Society (ACS) Green Chemistry & Sustainable Energy Summer School. Moreover, she co-developed a GreenChem Catalyst workshop, which was successfully piloted at the 2023 NOBCChE Conference. This workshop aimed to empower chemistry students by imparting knowledge on environmental justice, fostering sustainable careers, and contributing to resilient communities.
As a devoted chemistry educator, Monica Soma Hensley is dedicated to shaping the next generation of environmentally conscious and responsible chemists.

- Monica Soma Hensley was just tagged in a comment: Thanks for asking @Monica Soma Hensley . I have not made any business connections (besides the ones I already had), but I appreciate people helping me and agree with @Deborah Bromfield Lee that this could be expanded to different regions. I think if we can identify interested business now we could plan for future iterations moving into future semesters.Abby...
- Monica Soma Hensley was just tagged in a comment: Hi Abby, thanks for your post, this is a really cool concept and I love the idea of getting students to see more real-world context for green chemistry! I wanted to tag in @Megan Arnett who is the Executive Director for the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry and their Graduate Solutions course, which reminded me a bit of this (students working in teams with industry partners on case studies of green chemistry innovations). Even though it's at the graduate level, I feel like there are a lot of parallels. Megan, any thoughts on this? (you can also check out Megan's "Ask Me Anything" forum happening right now, there are likely some relevant discussions in there too). Also wanted to tag in @Deborah Bromfield Lee and @Monica Soma Hensley who might have some insights (or even know of others who may have tried similar approaches in their courses). Deborah and Monica, any thoughts here??...
